Laying Wood Floors in an Uneven Shaped Room

A perfectly square room is rare. Living and transitional rooms are particularly likely to be shaped unevenly. When you need to lay floors in these rooms, a table saw is an invaluable tool. If you don’t own a table saw, you can rent one from a hardware store to make your cuts.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from one end of the room to the other and find the center point. Repeat in the adjacent direction, this time marking the center line with a chalk line and the center point with an “X.”

    • 2

Decide which direction your floor boards should go. Typically floor boards follow the length of a room.

    • 3

Lay the first floor board along the center line. This ensures a straight line of boards for the rest of the room. Continue laying in all directions, attaching the pieces together as you go, but stopping once you reach the final board along the walls.

    • 4

Determine the cutting lines for each board along the wall by first placing a board on top of the previous board. Next set another board on top of the other two and flush against the wall. Trace the difference line onto the middle board. This is where you need to cut.

    • 5

Set the board onto the table saw and guide the board through to make the marked cut.

    • 6

Test fit the board and then set it into place using a edge tool and a hammer to tap the board into place. Continue around the room until all the final boards are in place.
