What Can I Put on a Concrete Floor in the Basement Before Carpet to Make It Warmer?

Basements are traditionally cold and damp. To turn your basement into a suitable living area, consider installing carpet to add to the warmth and comfort of the space. Because of the moisture that is often present in basements, care must be taken to protect your investment. Adding a good vapor barrier or a wood subfloor, in addition to a thick carpet pad, protects the carpet while providing a warm, comfortable floor for your family’s enjoyment.
  1. Plywood Subfloor

    • Adding a plywood subfloor over a concrete slab insulates the floor and prevents the transmission of moisture to the carpeting. The plywood is secured to the concrete slab with masonry screws for a suitable surface for installing carpet or other flooring materials.

    Vapor Barrier

    • Keeping the moisture in the basement at bay is one step toward a warm, comfortable living space. Dimpled polyethylene underlayment is an option. When installed, the product provides an air space above the slab that keeps dampness away from the finished floor. After the dimpled vapor barrier is installed, a plywood subfloor is placed on top and screwed to the concrete slab. The carpet pad and the carpet are installed over the plywood for a warm, comfortable flooring option.

    Carpet Pads

    • A carpet pad gives some insulation from the chill of a concrete basement floor. The pad should be mold- and mildew-resistant, as well as dense enough to provide both warmth and comfort. A carpet pad with latex backing may react with the concrete beneath, affecting the life of the rug and emitting an unpleasant odor. A better choice is a synthetic or felt carpet pad made from recycled fibers with no chemicals, glues or adhesives to react with the basement floor. Carpet pads designed for basement installations provide a protective barrier between the floor and the carpet to absorb cold and dampness. Choose a pad that is 1/4- to 3/8-inch thick for added cushioning and warmth. In addition to adding warmth and comfort, a good carpet pad protects and prolongs the life of the carpet.

    Radiant Flooring Systems

    • A radiant flooring system is an option that creates a warm floor in your basement. These systems are typically installed when the concrete is poured but can be put in place at a later date. The system thoroughly heats the floor, and the heat permeates the surrounding area as well. For installations on existing floors, the floors are retrofitted with thin heating mats that are affixed to the existing slab. The mats are covered with thin-set cement or gypsum overlays. Carpet pads and carpeting are then installed over the floor.
