How to Marble Around Outside Corners

There are many times in a floor tile installation when the floor moves around obstacles such as walls, doors and corners. When installing a tile floor, such as marble, in these areas, the tiles need to be cut to fit seamlessly around the obstacle. Cutting marble tiles to fit around this space requires the use of a wet saw, because marble is a hard, yet fragile, stone that is most easily cut by machine.

Things You'll Need

  • Grease pencil
  • Tile wet saw
  • Thinset mortar
  • Trowel
  • Rubber mallet

Instructions

    • 1

Tile the rest of the floor around the outside corner, leaving space for the tile or tiles that need to be cut around it. Allow these tiles to dry in place for at least 24 hours until you can walk on them without disturbing their setting.

    • 2

Locate the nearest full, installed tile to the outside corner and set a loose tile down right on top, lining its edges up with the tile below. This is the tile that you will cut to go around the corner.

    • 3

Lay a second loose tile on top of the first, but push this one until it meets the first wall of the corner. Trace a line on the first loose tile by finding the back edge of the second tile and using it as a straight edge. This will indicate where the first cut on the tile will need to be made; the second tile is used as a measuring device to give you the most accurate cut.

    • 4

Move both loose tiles to the other side of the corner. Repeat the process; line up the first loose tile on top of the nearest installed tile, and place the second loose tile on top lined up with the wall. Make a second pencil line. This line should intersect the first line, showing you the area to be cut out of the tile to fit.

Turn on the tile wet saw and place the tile on the tray, lining up one pencil mark with the blade. Push the tile into the saw until it reaches the intersection point with the second pencil mark. Pull the tile back away from the blade. Turn the tile and cut along the second pencil mark until the inner piece of marble comes loose.

Install the tile on the outside corner by spreading mortar directly onto the back of the tile in a process called back buttering. Press the tile into place and beat it in with a mallet. Wait 24 hours before sealing or grouting the marble floor.
