How to Do Poured Concrete Floors in a Room

Adding concrete is cost-effective option for a ground-level floor. When wood flooring or older concrete fails within an already-constructed room, replace the area with poured concrete. Before beginning the project, consider the placement of any piping or electric wiring that may run through the area. Do not pour concrete floors into already finished upper level rooms. Ensure the area has a sound foundation. Remove any old tile or faux flooring and take off the baseboards. Begin the project with an empty room.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the floor. If the existing is wood or concrete, rough the area with an orbital sander using 64-grit sandpaper. Remove any finish, such as varnish or paint. Sweep up any loose debris from the sanding with a broom.

    • 2

Frame the area with 1-by-4-inch boards. Place a piece of masking tape on the back of each board and attach it to the wall flush to the floor. Frame doorways and openings by placing a brick or a block on the outer side, and then tape the board to the piece. Be sure the boards’ ends are flush together, creating a solid barrier around the room.

    • 3

Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer's directions in a large bucket.

    • 4

Begin spreading the concrete with a shovel. Pour the concrete slowly into the space and push it to the edge with a shovel. Initially smooth the concrete with the shovel’s backside. Work slowly and steadily, so you don’t apply severe pressure to the framing boards.

    • 5

Smooth the concrete with a trowel. Even the concrete with a large trowel.

    • 6

Remove the framing. Once the concrete is dry, cover the small opening between the new floor and the wall with baseboards.
