Place three sections of two step pre-cut stair stringers on the floor near your work area. Position one stringer against the floor and against the wall. The bottom stringer should be under 6 inches to the first tread. The distance to the second tread should be 6-3/4 inches.
Keep the stringer flat on the floor and flat on the wall. Mark the top of the stringer on the wall. Remove the stringer. Measure and mark the same distance from the floor up the wall as your first mark. Draw a straight line on the wall between your marks. Check the line for level.
Move a stud finder along the wall along your line. Mark an "X" over the location of each stud. Position your stringer against the wall at the location of a stud. Make sure the stringer is flat to the wall. Screw through the side of the stringer board at an angle into the stud.
Use two long screws at each stud on one side of the board. Use a third screw in the opposite angle from the opposite side of the stringer when possible. Repeat for the two remaining stringers. Use wood shims to elevate the stringer slightly in order to keep the top of the stringer level with the line.
Measure the riser from the top of the stringer down the vertical to the next step. Measure the length of the riser. Cut the riser from 1 inch thick wood to these measurements. Screw the riser to the face of the top step by screwing into the face of the stringer. Use two screws per stringer. Repeat for the second step.
Measure the depth of the stair tread and add 1 inch for a bullnose overhang. Cut your stair treads. Screw the tread into place screwing down through the tread into the top of the stringer. Use two screws per stringer. Repeat for the last tread.
