How to Join Ceramic Tile in a Doorway

Matching the tile joints from one room to another can be difficult. Additionally, trying to match the tile joints can sometimes make the tile installation in one of the rooms look like it was poorly done. Instead of trying to perfectly join the ceramic tiles from room to room, you can join the ceramic tiles with a threshold. The most common types of thresholds for tiles are marble and tile. The installation of a marble or tile threshold is simple to complete, and the process is much like installing tile.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the doorway with a measuring tape. Write down the measurement on a piece of paper. Use this measurement to have a marble threshold cut to size when it is purchased. If you are using a tile threshold, cut it to size on a tile saw.

    • 2

Measure the width of the marble or tile threshold. Create two straight chalk lines in the doorway to indicate where the threshold will be installed. Once the two chalk lines are in place, you can install the tile up to the lines. Cut the tiles to fit the space with a tile saw.

    • 3

Install the marble threshold. Apply thinset mortar to the subfloor with a notched trowel. Set the marble threshold in place on top of the thinset mortar. Let the mortar dry overnight.

Spread a bead of caulk between the installed tile and the threshold. Smooth the caulk down with your finger, and let it dry overnight.
