How to Do Thresholds on Hardwood Floors

When installing a hardwood floor, you must set threshold strips in doorways or other areas where the flooring transitions from hardwood to another flooring material. Hardwood floors must have an expansion space between the wood and walls, doorways, other flooring materials and other obstructions. This space allows the wood floor to expand and contract naturally. A threshold strip conceals the expansion joint and offers a visually attractive way to create a transition between flooring materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the threshold area where you plan to install the threshold strip. Take measurements twice to ensure you measure accurately.

    • 2

Measure and mark with a pencil the width of the threshold area on the threshold strip. Trim the strip along the line you marked, using the miter saw.

    • 3

Position the threshold strip over the edge of the hardwood and the parallel surface. Measure to ensure the threshold strip sits with at least a 1/8-inch overlap over the hardwood flooring and the other surface.

    • 4

Drive finishing nails through the threshold strip, through the expansion space between the hardwood and the other surface. The nails need to penetrate the subfloor to anchor the threshold strip into place.
