DIY Non-Skid Coating for Exterior Tile

Slippery tile is dangerous and exterior tile, such as on a deck, can be a nightmare in the rain. You can give your tile a protective coating that also adds traction to the surface, keeping everyone on stable footing. These coatings are available for interior and exterior use and are an easy and effective way to finish the tile. The treatment is best applied on unsealed tile. Look for an oil-based paving paint or specially designed anti-slip coating for the tile.

Clean the tile using trisodium phosphate, a bucket and scrub brush. Rinse the tile using a hose to remove any grit and residue. Allow the tile to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

Apply the no-slip coating to the tile using a sponge roller or bristle paintbrush. Cut in the edges around the house using a bristle paintbrush. Start on the side farthest from your exit so you don't paint yourself into a corner.
