How to Install Your Own Lock Snap Tile in Kitchen

Tiles that lock or snap into place are made from laminate. They mimic stone kitchen tiles but are more affordable and easier to install. They come in panels that you lock together for a neat, even seal. These are a great option for a kitchen because they are so durable, water resistant and come in so many styles. These locking tiles are designed so almost anyone can install them with a few basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from the room -- including appliances, such as the refrigerator -- so that the floor is completely bare.

    • 2

Pull all the baseboard molding off the wall using a crowbar with a wood wedge behind it.

    • 3

Cut around the door frames to make an opening for the tiles to fit. Lay a tile on a piece of underlay and press it up against the door frame to gauge how much room you'll need. Cut above the tile with a Japanese handsaw to make room for the tiles. Remove the cut wood pieces.

    • 4

Nail a metal trim track in the center of any door frames that lead out of the room. This allows the tile to easily transition to the flooring in the neighboring room. Use ring shank nails for the track.

    • 5

Unroll the underlay along the floor and cut it to fit the room. Leave a 2-inch gap between the underlay and the walls.

    • 6

Set plastic spacers between the tiles and the wall. The tile should never be pushed up against the wall and the spacers are designed to give exact, even spacing as you install the tiles.

    • 7

Lay your first tile down in the far corner of the room. Connect the next panel of tiles by lowering one end into the first tile so it clicks in place. Then lay it flat. Lay one row of panels.

    • 8

Continue laying the next roll of the tiles in the same manner. Tape the two rows together using small pieces of duct tape. This keeps the entire row locked even when you lift the next panel to click it in place. When finished, tap the tile panels closely together using a wood block and hammer.

    • 9

Cut the tile to fit the door casings and then drive the tile under the door frame using a wood block and hammer.

    • 10

Seal the space between the flooring and the walls with flexible caulk in a caulking gun. Wet a finger and smooth the caulk before it dries to get an even finish.

    • 11

Pound the prefinished wood transition strips into the metal trim track you previously installed in the doorways.

    • 12

Install new baseboard molding with a nail gun. Hide the nails with colored wax crayon that matches the trim.
