How to Drill the Anchors in a Floor for Slacklining

Slacklining uses a narrow length of flexible webbing suspended off the ground to improve balance. Strong anchor points are required to ensure that both ends of the line remain secure while under the strain of a slackliner's weight. Indoor slacklining requires specific anchors installed in concrete to ensure they remain in place under strain. The anchors need to be strong enough to hold the line in place without protruding past the top of the floor when the line is not in use.

  • Hammer drill
  • Drop-in expansion anchor

Instructions

    • 1

Secure a 5/8-inch masonry bit into the chuck of a hammer drill.

    • 2

Place a drop-in expansion anchor against the masonry blade. Align one end of the anchor with the tip of the drill bit. Mark the other end of the anchor on the drill bit shaft with a white paint marker. Substitute another color if white is unavailable. Do not use a dark color as it will be harder to see while drilling.

    • 3

Drill a hole in -- not through -- the floor. Stop drilling when the white mark on the drill bit sinks 1/8-inch below the surface of the floor. Drill a second hole at the distance recommended by the slackline manufacturer.

    • 4

Push the end of a 3/4-inch-diameter wire brush forcefully into one of the drilled holes. Turn the brush handle clockwise as you pull it out of the hole. Repeat the process four times per hole. Place the tip of a can of compressed air into one of the holes. Cover the hole loosely with a rag then blast air into the hole. Clear any loose dust from the second hole with the same method.

    • 5

Slide one drop-in anchor into each cleaned hole with the threaded end facing away from the floor. Tap each anchor lightly with a hammer until it sits flush with the top of the floor.

    • 6

Set the thin end of a setting tool in the end of an anchor. Hit the thick end of the tool forcefully with a hammer three times. Pull the setting tool out of the anchor. Set the second anchor with the same method.
