Formica Density

Formica is the leading manufacturer of laminate products that include flooring and countertops. Formica countertops are easy to clean and reasonably priced. Formica flooring also is an affordable laminate flooring material. The density of a Formica product can affect the life of the product and its durability. Different Formica products have different densities, and it is imperative to determine the density of the product before making a purchase.
  1. General Information

    • Formica is a nonporous building material sold in sheets. Available widths equal 36 inches, 48 inches and 60 inches, and lengths of the sheets measure 96 inches, 120 inches and 144 inches. Formica density is usually expressed in kilograms per meter. The less thick the Formica product is, the smaller the density. Common densities for Formica products are 730 and 750 kilograms per meter.

    Determining Density

    • Density is equal to the mass of an item divided by the volume. Mass is the weight and volume is the measurement that equals the space inside an enclosed object.

    Variables

    • Generally speaking, if a laminate product is thicker than another laminate product, it will weigh more. This variable will affect the density of the product. Formica products range in thickness from 0.02-inch thick products to 2.5 inch-thick products. Products 0.45-inch thick are the most requested Formica products.

    Considerations

    • The measurements of various laminate products can vary even when listed under a specific density. Formica products can have a variance in density that allows for .0197-inch in thickness. This means that if a customer orders a Formica product with a 0.4-inch thickness, the product he receives may have a thickness between 0.38 to 0.42 inch.
