Nuheat Floor Heating Installation Information

Nuheat produces floor heating systems that install between the subfloor and the walking floor of a room. This system works to heat the surface of a floor from beneath to keep the floor warm during the cold months of the year, making it more comfortable when walked on barefoot or in socked feet.
  1. The Nuheat System

    • The Nuheat heating system consists of several components. The heating process takes place in mats that lay directly on the subfloor surface, over which the main walking floor materials may be installed. These mats come in a variety of sizes, enabling you to find a fit for rooms of nearly any size. The system also uses cables to connect the mats to a home’s electricity and to a thermostat, which is used to control the temperature.

    Installing for Tile or Stone

    • The mats for a Nuheat system must be attached to the subfloor to prevent the mats from moving during or after installation. When installing Nuheat mats for use under stone or tile, you must secure the mats to the floor using a thin layer of thinset mortar. Once the mortar that holds the mats in place has dried, install the stone or tile over the mats with another layer of thinset mortar just as you would install the tile or stone on any other flooring surface.

    Installing for Hardwood and Laminate

    • When installing the Nuheat system for hardwood, mats must still be secured to the subfloor. This can be done with a layer of thinset mortar just like the installation for tile or stone. However, before installing hardwood or laminate flooring as a floating floor over the top of the Nuheat system, you must cover the Nuheat mats with another layer of mortar. This mortar should be smoothed down to a flat surface and allowed to dry fully before you install hardwood or laminate planks on top.

    Heed Warnings

    • Tile, stone and other fire-resistant materials can generally withstand higher temperatures than flammable materials, like wood and laminates. Since the use of heated flooring mats has become more common, many manufacturers now include information on the maximum heat levels for hardwood or laminate flooring planks. Consult the owner’s manual provided with your flooring planks to determine safe temperatures at which you can use your Nuheat floor heating system. If the information isn’t listed in the manual, contact the manufacturer to ensure safe operation.
