How to Adhere Laminate Stair Nose Molding

A stair nose gives your steps a rounded, more finished appearance than simply installing a piece of laminate flooring to the tread and riser. Along with the other available pieces of molding and trim, the stair nose complements the floor and offers the final touches. Installing stair nose is a simple, do-it-yourself task that requires only the most minimal knowledge of tools and flooring. While some homeowners prefer to install the stair nose with both construction adhesive and finish nails, many times the construction adhesive is all that is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the stair nose to length with the saw of your choice, whether a miter saw, circular saw, table saw or other type.

    • 2

Cut a piece of laminate to fit the riser and be flush with the subfloor on the top step.

    • 3

Install the laminate on the riser with construction adhesive. Apply a serpentine bead of adhesive to the laminate plank and press it onto the riser. If the laminate plank has attached underlayment or fabric, remove it.

    • 4

Dry-fit the stair nose on top of the step where you intend to place it. The rounded nose of the molding should sit against the riser.

    • 5

Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the back of the stair nose in a serpentine pattern and press it into place.

    • 6

Finish the installation with two finish nails and cover the nail holes with a touch-up kit or wood putty that matches the floor.

    • 7

Attach the first piece of laminate planking to the stair nose either by tongue-and-groove or glue it down, depending on the type of laminate.
