How to Build a Floor System on Top of the Foundation

Basements are known for occasionally having water or moisture problems. It is recommended to use a product such as DRIcore, which is a floating subfloor that allows air or water to flow easily beneath it, preventing water damage and mold or mildew issues. In turn, this protects the flooring that is installed. Like many subfloors, DRIcore sides are tongue-and-groove, so panels are joined by connecting adjacent panels without the use of screws or glue.

Things You'll Need

  • DRIcore panels
  • Self-leveling concrete
  • 1/4-inch spacers
  • Circular saw
  • Carpenter's square
  • Marker
  • Rubber mallet
  • Dust mask

Instructions

  1. Prep the Foundation Surface

    • 1

      Sweep the foundation thoroughly.

    • 2

Inspect the foundation for dips or uneven spots. Make a note of areas that are 1/4 inch or lower than the main surface.

    • 3

Fill the low spots with self-leveling compound. Allow to dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Sweep the surface again to be sure it is free from debris.

    • 5

Calculate the square feet of your floor (length x width) and divide that number by 3.3 to determine the number of DRIcore panels you will need.

    • 6

Set the DRIcore panels on the foundation level. Wait 24 hours before continuing with the installation to acclimate the DRIcore to the temperature and humidity of the area in which it will be installed.

    Install DRIcore Subfloor

    • 7

Place 1/4-inch spacers along the walls. It is important to do this to allow for the expansion and contraction of the materials. Also place the spacers along any other fixed surfaces.

    • 8

Lay the first DRIcore panel in a corner at one end of the longest wall, placing the groove side up against the 1/4-inch spacers. Panels should not be cut down to less than 6 inches. It is necessary to plan so you can determine whether a piece smaller than six inches is required for the last piece of the row. If this is the case, cut the first corner piece down for the last piece to be a minimum of 6 inches.

    • 9

Make sure this first panel is square and slide additional panels into place and tap with a rubber mallet to be sure they are secured together tightly. Continue until the first row is complete.

    • 10

Stagger the seams of the second row. This will add strength and stability to the subfloor. Use a circular saw to cut the first panel of that row. Continue adding panels to finish the second row.

    • 11

Install row three in the same fashion as row one. Odd rows will be placed alike; even rows will be staggered like row two. Continue laying and tightly securing panels until finished.

    • 12

Make any necessary cuts using a circular saw. As you reach the final row, it is likely that many cuts will be required.

    • 13

Ensure the panels create a level subfloor using the DRIcore leveling kit. The kit includes shims that fit over the cleats on the underside of the DRIcore panels.

    • 14

Install flooring as desired. DRIcore makes it possible to put down solid hardwood, laminate or carpet.
