How to Level a Step Foundation

A stepped foundation is one that is built on multiple levels, usually ascending in a straight line. If you're building on an old stepped foundation or a new one that was improperly laid, the steps may not be perfectly level. An irregular foundation will only lead to problems for your building project, so you'll have to follow the necessary procedure to correct any irregularities.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Stake strings across the lowest step of your foundation, using a spirit level to ensure that every one is perfectly horizontal. A grid of strings with one string every 6 feet is ideal. Use blocks of wood or other objects instead of stakes on the riser side of the foundation, since the next step up will get in the way of ground access for stakes on that side.

Measure the height of the string above your foundation every few feet, writing the number on a piece of tape stuck to the blocks at each measuring point. Compare the numbers when finished to determine where the irregularities in your foundation are and their degree of severity.

Wash all indented portions of the foundation with grease-cutting detergent and scrub with a wire brush. Vacuum the surface to remove any loose debris. Mix concrete patching compound as directed on the packaging and spread it over the irregularities with a trowel. Use a level to ensure the patch fixes the problem.

Proceed to the next step up on the foundation, measuring and leveling the surface as you did with the first step. Continue until all steps are perfectly level. Wait 24 hours for the patching compound to fully set before building on the level.
