How to Install Glass Doors & Firescreens

Renovating your fireplace is a simple way to give a room an entirely new look. Installing glass doors and screens is one method of modernizing the fireplace. The firescreen prevents embers from flying out of the fireplace while you enjoy the fire. Close the heat-tempered glass doors when you leave wood fires to burn themselves out. Fireplace doors and screens are attached to the lintel, the top frame component around the firebox.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the fireplace firebox length and width. Purchase a door and screen set that fits the firebox with an inch or two on either side to attach the door to the lintel.

    • 2

Secure the lintel clamps in place on the door by screwing them in tightly. Lintel clamps hold the doors to the interior top frame with an L bracket extending up into the fireplace. Once the clamp is on the door securely, measure it in the fireplace and adjust the length of the L to fit the lintel width.

    • 3

Mark the bottom fireplace base with a permanent marker where the door frame will attach. Drill the holes with a masonry bit attached to the drill. Hammer masonry anchors into the holes -- anchors allow the screw to hold without crumbling the brick or mortar in the fireplace.

    • 4

Compact fiberglass insulation strips into the top, left and right channel around the back of the door frame. The insulation keeps unwanted smoke from leaking into the room. Use gloves when working with fiberglass insulation.

    • 5

Position the door frame in the firebox with the lintel clamp in place and the doors and screen open. Screw the doors to the masonry anchors before tightening the lintel clamp.

    • 6

Lay with your head in the firebox looking up at the lintel. Tighten the lintel clamps by screwing them into the lintel.
