Determine the size of your base for your stove. As a general rule, the brick base needs to extend at least 18 inches out from the wood stove on all sides, but the exact dimensions can vary depending on the manufacturer of your wood stove.
Lay out the dimensions of the brick base area with a pencil, tape measure and chalk line. Start with the face of the base and draw two marks on the floor. Pop a chalk line between these two marks. Mark the outer edges on the side and use a framing square to draw the lines square. Repeat the chalk line process for the back side of the base area, giving you a boxed in area.
Mix up some thinset in a bucket with the drill and paddle. Spread it onto the floor for the bricks with the notched trowel. Press the bricks into the base of mortar and allow as much as you want for grout joints, not to exceed 1/2 inch. Let the installation dry for 24 hours.
Mix up some grout in the bucket and fill the grout bag. Insert the tip of the bag into the joints and squeeze the bag. Fill the joints until they are slightly more than full. Wait an hour and then cut the excess off with the margin trowel, leaving behind a smooth base. Let the installation dry for 72 hours before using the wood stove.
