Fireplace dampers are generally near the bottom of the chimney. A fireplace damper operates as an air-flow valve. It is closed when the fireplace is not in use so that the warm air in the room doesn't escape through the chimney. It is left open when the fire is smoldering so the air can vent through the chimney. Fireplace dampers should open 90 percent of the size of the flue. See-through fireplace dampers let you clearly see when an obstruction is blocking the air flow through the chimney. However, they have several drawbacks, including their ability to easily open and close, their appearance and their tendency to warp.
Some see-through fireplace dampers operate on a track. This track can easily become damaged, fall off the track or get broken, making your see-through fireplace damper inoperable. Soot or other debris can also pile up near the handle, making the damper impossible to open. Clean the damper area with a soot brush if this happens.
See-through fireplace dampers are generally constructed from a clear plastic material. If the fire in your fireplace gets too hot, this can lead to warping in your see-through fireplace damper. This warping can prevent the damper from closing properly and can also cause gaps to form in the damper that allow air to escape and make your home less energy-efficient.
Fireplace dampers should be installed at least 8 inches above the fireplace opening. Depending on the size of your fireplace damper, it may be visible from certain locations in your room. The clear aspect of the damper may create a look that is not visually attractive. The soot and chimney debris may accumulate on the see-through chimney damper, changing the clear nature of the damper to an unattractive brown or black color. Additionally, the damper may be more noticeable than a damper that is the same color as the fireplace or the surround.
Fireplace dampers can leak because of the installation or general construction. See-through fireplace dampers that leak can let cold air in during cold months, in a similar manner as a fireplace with no damper. Install weatherstripping around the damper to seal the damper and avoid unnecessary air leaks.
