Fireplace Adaptations

Existing fireplaces can be modified to be used as pellet stoves or wood-burning stoves. These modifications utilize the free space inside the fireplace hearth, as well as the exhaust system through the fireplace chimney.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the chimney to determine if the chimney is clean, in good repair and meets local safety-code requirements. It may be necessary to hire an engineer, chimney specialist or contractor to perform this evaluation. Repair the chimney in order to bring it to proper operating condition.

    • 2

Read the entire pellet-stove insert manual. Take note of all manufacturer's specifications regarding floor protection. Check your existing fireplace floor, purchase floor protection as needed and install the floor protection according to the floor-protection installation specifications.

    • 3

Measure the width and height of the fireplace after the floor protection has been installed or the existing protection has been verified. Check the dimensions of the insert and consult the pellet-stove insert manual. Add spacers to ensure airspace if so required by the manufacturer.

    • 4

Measure the depth of your fireplace. Check the pellet-stove insert manual to determine the spacing required between the sides, back and top of the fireplace. Mark all of the measurements to help you position the insert.

    • 5

Locate the nearest circuit. Make sure that the circuit has appropriate ratings for the pellet-stove insert.

    • 6

Review the pellet-stove insert manual. Determine if the chimney must be lined with specialty material before the vent system is installed. Install the material according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Construct a vertical venting pipe that runs through the center of the chimney. The venting pipe must be constructed of PL vent pipe with approved, gastight joints; the joints can be formed with pipe sealant or sealant bands. (Use the product recommended by the insert manufacturer.) The pipe should be centered through the middle of the chimney, allowing air to circulate around the entire circumference of the pipe. It may be necessary to use angled pieces to navigate the chimney path.

    • 8

Slide a top plate and a cap on the top of the pipe that protrudes from the top of the chimney.

    • 9

Slide the insert into place. Connect the venting pipe to the top of the insert. Plug in the insert and follow the manufacturer's instructions for operation.
