Check the chimney to make sure that no other appliance is using the chimney flue. If you install a wood stove exhaust pipe higher than an oil burner exhaust, toxic gasses could enter your home through the wood stovepipe.
Remove the flue plate covering the opening to the flue in your chimney, by prying off the metal plate with a flat screwdriver. Remove any insulation behind the plate and clean away the debris from the inside of the opening.
Hire a chimney professional to inspect and clean your chimney. Explain your plans to install a wood stove and ask the professional if you need to install a metal chimney liner. If so, install the liner to reach from the top of the chimney through the opening in the chimney for your wood stove.
Measure the outlet opening on your wood stove to determine the width of stovepipe to purchase. Connect the stovepipe to the wood stove. Install a stainless steel relining system into the chimney following the manufacturer’s directions. Connect the chimney pipe with the stove pipe and screw in place with self drilling stovepipe screws.
