How to Build a Surround Wall for a Coal Stove

Measure the space on the wall where you wish to build the surround wall. The height and width of the surround needs be higher and wider than the stove to protect the wall behind the stove.

Outline the measurements with masking tape. Use a level to ensure the lines are straight.

Find the studs behind the drywall with an electric stud finder. You can rent this tool at many home improvement stores or rental centers. Mark the studs with a pencil.

Secure the fireproof wall spacers to the studs in the wall. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for installation. The spacers are typically 1-inch spacers installed with 2 1/2-inch screws to secure the spacers. The space creates an insulated gap between the surround and the wall.

Cut the cement board to fit the dimensions for your surround wall with a utility knife and a straightedge.

Install cement board to the wall, screwing the boards in place into the wall studs. Use 1/2-inch cement board for the surround wall. Secure screws 8 inches apart along the wall studs.

Apply tile adhesive to the cement board with a trowel. Place hearth tiles on the adhesive and press firmly to the wall. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between the tiles. Let the adhesive dry for four to six hours.

Spread grout over the tiles so the grout fills in the spaces between the tiles. When the grout is almost dry, wipe away excess grout with a damp rag.
