How to Install a Free Standing Fireplace

Some homeowners prefer the look and character of a freestanding fireplace. These units come in all shapes and models, and most install easily by the homeowner. With a little help and some skill, installing a freestanding fireplace is a weekend project.

  Locate a place in the home to place the freestanding fireplace, commonly in the corner of a room. Placing the freestanding fireplace against an outside facing wall is typical for venting purposes.

  Construct a non-combustible for the fireplace to stand upon. Brick, stone and heat resistant tile are common products for the hearth. The hearth must extend at least 16 inches in front of the freestanding fireplace and 10 inches around the remainder of the unit.

  Place the freestanding fireplace at least 36 inches from any wall. Keep all combustible materials away from the fireplace unit at all times.

  Provide an air inlet from outside the home. This inlet or pipe must extend higher than the winter snowline and must not allow ashes to fall through the inlet.

  Cut a hole through the roof to extend the stovepipe. The stovepipe provided with the freestanding fireplace will act as the ventilation system for the heat and soot. Seal the rooftop area surrounding the stovepipe with a heat resistant compound.
