How to Use PVC to Surround a Fireplace

PVC flooring is a flooring option that is durable, easy to clean and easy to install. A variety of styles and looks are available, so you can design the flooring to fit with the look of the fireplace. PVC, also known as vinyl, can be safely installed directly adjacent to a fireplace surround or hearth. But you should never install vinyl tiles as part of a hearth. International building codes require at least 12 inches from the fire box to combustible materials. If your fireplace does not maintain this clearance, then the flooring should be installed farther away from it.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area where you plan to install the flooring. Remove debris, fill any cracks and ensure the flooring is smooth and level.

    • 2

Set the tiles down around the fireplace in the configuration desired. You might need to cut some tiles down to size so they are flush with the fireplace. To accomplish that, set the tiles in place, starting from the outer edge of the planned flooring area. Continue placing the tiles until you reach the fireplace. Where the edging tiles must be cut to size, trace the necessary cutting line with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut tiles down to size, if necessary, using a vinyl tile cutter. Line up the tile on the cutter and press down on the handle to make a clean cut on the line you traced.

    • 4

Spread adhesive to the floor, or peel off the adhesive backing from the tiles. Press each tile in place according to the configuration you have planned. Install the cut tiles so they are flush with the fireplace masonry.

    • 5

Press down the entire floor with a rolling pin once it has dried overnight.

    • 6

Apply silicon caulking along the edge of the vinyl tiles where they meet the fireplace. This keeps the tiles from rolling up. Installing additional molding is not necessary.
