How to Install a Vestal Fireplace Damper

A fireplace damper opens and closes to allow or block airflow from the fireplace flue. When you are using your fireplace, you must have the damper open or the room will fill up with smoke. When the fireplace is not in use, you should close the damper to prevent wildlife, or debris, from entering your home through the fireplace. To install the Vestal damper, your fireplace must already have a damper in place that you can remove. Measure the current fireplace damper before purchasing the Vestal damper to ensure the proper fit. Installing a Vestal fireplace damper will only take a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all accessories and debris from your fireplace once the fireplace has cooled down.

    • 2

Vacuum or sweep out the fireplace.

    • 3

Look inside of the fireplace and locate the damper right above the inside wall.

    • 4

Remove the four bolts that hold the current damper in place by using a wrench. The damper can be in the open or closed position to access the screws, but it will be easier to remove if the damper is closed. To close the damper, either pull down on the chain connected to the damper and release it once the damper closes, or slide the rod over until the damper is closed.

    • 5

Turn the damper sideways and pull it out from the fireplace.

    • 6

Slide the new Vestal fireplace damper up into place.

    • 7

Insert the four bolts into place, and then tighten them with the wrench.
