Masonry Fireplace-Damper Installation

Masonry fireplaces add charm and warmth to any room, unless they lack properly functioning dampers. Many old masonry fireplaces were designed without dampers, and even those with dampers experience failures as they age. Replacing a throat damper requires the installer to remove a large portion of the fireplace -- and is not recommended as a do-it-yourself project. A newer style of damper has been developed, however, that fits on top of the chimney. Installing one of these top-sealing dampers is a simple weekend project for most homeowners.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the damper by pushing the smaller hooked end of the dampener-opener connector through the slot in the tube in the center of the damper. Bend the wire hook so it will not come loose.

    • 2

Unwind the dampener-opener wire carefully, so it doesn't tangle. Crimp the damper wire to the larger hook on the damper. Attach the other end of the wire to the chain or pull in the damper kit, and fasten with an Allen wrench.

    • 3

Apply construction adhesive to the top lip of the flue. Drop the damper wire through the chimney, being careful not to get any adhesive on it. Press the top sealing damper into the adhesive, with the solid section at the top and the open section on the lip of the flue. Allow the adhesive to set 24 hours before proceeding.

    • 4

Pull the slack out of the damper-control line from inside the house. Test the damper to ensure it functions properly by pulling the line and releasing it several times. Use the damper line bracket as a guide to drill installation holes near the front of the firebox inside the chimney, approximately 20 inches off the firebox floor.

    • 5

Hold the bracket up against the firebox wall, lining the holes in the firebox with those in the bracket. Tap the fasteners into the holes in the firebox, through the bracket, until they're tightly installed.

    • 6

Loosen the wire connector on the damper-control handle and pull the wire through until the slack is removed. Feed the damper-control handle through the bracket, and position in the damper-open position. Pull the wire taut, and tighten the wire connector snugly. Remove the excess wire with wire cutters.
