DIY Gel Fireplaces

DIY gel fuel fireplaces are popular choices for people who want the ambiance, comfort and warmth that a fireplace offers without the hassle. A traditional fireplace is impractical for many settings. Gel-fueled fireplaces are attractive because they can be installed in just about any location, including homes, apartments and offices. Since the fireplace does not produce smoke, fumes, gases or odors, the appliances do not have to be vented.
  1. Choose a Fireplace

    • Visit the code enforcement department for your city and speak to a building code inspector about the regulations for gel fireplaces. There are a wide variety of gel fireplace styles and models. If you want a more modern look, select a brass or stainless-steel design. You can also paint the fireplace to blend with your decor. For a more traditional appearance, purchase a gel fireplace comprised of rich hardwood, such as oak, cherry or walnut. Decide on whether you want a free standing model or one that is wall mounted. Corner models are available if you only have a small amount of space. You can also buy tabletop personal gel fireplaces.

    Installation Guidelines

    • There are no clearance requirements for gel fireplaces. Fireproof walls and floor areas are not required for the appliances. Installing ceramic tile, or other non-combustible materials typically used for hearths and surrounds is usually optional. There is some basic assembly required in order to get the fireplace up and operating. Basic gel fireplace kits include at least a firebox and concrete logs. Standard household tools will suffice for the installation, which should take less than two hours. If you are willing to take on more work, you can construct a simple mantel or even a more sophisticated surround.

It is not necessary to vent gel fireplaces to chimney flues or through outside walls. This makes it perfect for apartments or settings where a conventional fireplace is not practical. This feature also makes the fireplaces very mobile. Gas and electrical connections are not required to operate gel fireplaces. Gel fireplaces use an alcohol-based transparent bio-gel fuel blend, which is available in cans. Each can burns as long as three hours. The fuel emits 3,000 BTUs, which is the amount of heat from the fireplace. Since there is no heat loss up a chimney or flue, all the heat generated by the fireplace is distributed in the space.

If you have a functionally obsolete or inoperable wood-burning fireplace, install a gel fireplace insert. Measure the width and height of the fireplace opening as well as the width, height and depth of the firebox. This will ensure that you purchase the right size insert for your fireplace. Seal the chimney damper opening before installing the gel fireplace insert.
