Fireplace Mantel Components

A fireplace without a mantel looks naked and unfinished, almost neglected. Fireplace mantels give the fireplace the charm and character that is expected, as well as provide a wonderful place to put decorative accessories. There are many different types of mantels and fireplace surrounds that give an entirely different feeling, with each fitting the home's style and decor.
  1. Mantel Shelves

    • Mantel shelf

A mantel shelf can serve as a decorative element by itself or as a shelf for pictures and other display items. The depth of the mantel shelf and the method for attaching it to the wall will determine the amount of weight that can be placed on the mantel. Keep this in mind when choosing a mantel shelf.

    Corbels

    • Even if the fireplace mantel shelf does not need extra support, decorative corbels are a tasteful attraction to the fireplace mantel giving it depth and a look of sturdiness. Corbels can be very ornate or very simple, matching just about every type of style and decor.

    Medallions

    • Medallion

For a more fancy fireplace mantel, medallions are an elegant touch. Many times, medallions are built into the breastplate of the mantel. Some are even adjustable, allowing for the height of the breastplate to be moved up or down. Other medallions are independent of all other parts and can be placed literally anywhere around the perimeter of the fireplace.

    Decoprative Moldings

    • Fireplace with moldings

Decorative moldings are typical of most mantels in older homes. Moldings tend to frame the fireplace and anchor the fireplace to the room.

    Carvings

    • Fireplace with carvings

Carvings are little add-ons that are best proportioned when placed in the middle of a flat breastplate under the mantel shelf. This brings out a touch of decoration without becoming too busy and taking away from the beauty of the rest of the fireplace.
