How to Cut Flue Tile

Flue tile is a tubular type of tile that is made from a clay-based material, and is commonly used in the construction of traditional wood-burning fireplaces and chimneys. Like other tile products, flue tile is durable and strong, making it a generally difficult material to alter without the use of proper tools. Cutting flue tile is a generally straightforward task that can usually be completed by just about anyone, using basic masonry tools and skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the cut to be made on the flue tile, using the lumber pencil, and the flexible metal straight edge if necessary.

    • 2

Put on the safety glasses before moving on to the next step.

    • 3

Place the flue tile on a sturdy surface and hold firmly.

    • 4

Hold the angle grinder firmly and line up the masonry blade with the cut mark on the flue tile.

    • 5

Press the power switch on the angle grinder; the power switch is located on the angle grinder handle.

    • 6

Gently push the angle grinder and masonry blade through the flue tile material, cutting along the cut line. Keep the angle grinder's power switch pressed in the on position until the cut is complete; this will keep the blade from getting stuck between the cut edges.
