Installation Guide for a Harmon Pellet Stove

Harmon pellet stove installation methods have slight variations, depending on the stove you choose and the method of venting. The stove is used to provide heat for a particular zone. The best place to install a Harmon pellet stove is in a room your family uses regularly. Purchase your wood pellet stove from an authorized dealer to make sure your warranty is valid. The most popular pellet stoves are available in freestanding models and inserts. There is also a central furnace model.
  1. Location

    • Follow the manual for determining how far to locate the stove from walls. Consider the clearance for the back and sides of the stove. The non-combustible floor, or hearth, must also meet the product specifications and local building codes. Install the room sensor as instructed.

    Venting: Chimney

    • There are three types of venting options: chimney, partial chimney and direct venting. Chimney installations require the chimney flue, or class A stainless-steel chimney, to be structurally sound. The diameter of the chimney liner must be the appropriate size. In some cases, traditional wood-burning chimneys must have the flues relined to accommodate the Harmon wood pellet stove.

    Venting: Partial-Chimney

    • Partial-chimney venting requires a vertical vent pipe run, at least 3 to 5 feet, before installing an elbow and exiting horizontally through the outside wall. For vertical runs in excess of 8 feet, a double-wall pipe, with 1-inch air gap between the layers, is recommended. An alternative choice is create the 3-to-5 foot vertical run after exiting the outside wall.

    Venting: Direct

    • The horizontal vent method extends a vent pipe from the vent port, which is located on the back of the stove, horizontally out the exterior wall and vertically the necessary height. It's essential to match he pipe size with the requirements of the stove outlet. A pipe that is too large slows the emission of exhaust and causes excessive creosote build-up. Moreover, it interferes with the stove's efficiency.

    Considerations

    • Check the owner's manual and the local building codes for guidance on the installation of an outside air kit and cap where the vent pipe terminates on the exterior.
