How to Install a Chimney Flue for a Wood Stove

Properly installing a chimney flue for your wood stove prevents your house from filling with smoke. This task involves going up on the roof and inserting a stovepipe down the chimney; this is a dangerous job and something that you should hire a professional to do. But once the stovepipe is in place, you can finish the job yourself with just a few tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Sheet metal
  • Masonry nails
  • Hammer
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Tin snips
  • Screwdriver
  • Silicone sealant (heat resistant)
  • Work gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Take out the chimney damper in your fireplace. Remove the pins holding it in place with needle-nose pliers, and lift the damper out with your hands.

    • 2

Use the measuring tape to determine the dimensions of the chimney opening. Record the measurement, adding 1 inch to each dimension.

    • 3

Cut a piece of sheet metal with the tin snips the size of the measurement you made for the chimney opening.

    • 4

Clip a slit in the four corners of the piece of sheet metal, and fold up the edges to make a 1-inch flange on each side.

    • 5

Make a hole with the tin snips in the center of the sheet metal, the same diameter of your stovepipe. Insert the sheet metal piece you constructed into the opening of the chimney, sliding it over the stovepipe opening.

    • 6

Affix the sheet metal piece by inserting masonry nails through the flanges and hammering them into the masonry walls of the chimney. Caulk the edges with the silicone sealant. You can now affix the stovepipe to your wood stove.
