Art Piece

• One modern touch to your fireplace is to add an art piece above it. In contemporary design, the artwork is relatively simple. Usually it's in a bold color, such as red or orange, to add color to an already neutral room. Alternatively, find an art piece with color blocks of neutrals such as gray or taupe. Either type of print should be large, and just about match the width of the fireplace mantel.

Large Mirror

• Create a sleek design with your fireplace by propping or hanging a large mirror on or above the fireplace mantel. The mirror should be the width of the fireplace mantel and tall enough to almost reach the ceiling. This enhances the look of modern design and also adds brightness and light to your living room.

Candles

• Use candles to make a stylish display on your fireplace mantel. One way to do so is to use tea lights to create this display. You need approximately eight to 10 of them. Place them in a line, from one end to the other. Make sure that each tea light candle is the same distance apart from the next. Another way to display candles on the mantel is to add one large candle on a candle holder in the middle of the mantel.
