How to Install a Chimney Liner for a Fireplace Insert

The fireplace chimney can deteriorate over time. Replacing it can be very costly, which is why many people opt for installing a liner. The liner produces more heat with which to warm a large room comfortably, resulting in lower heating costs. The installation of the fireplace insert is not expensive, and is a simple task that most homeowners can do themselves, although it is best to have a few friends on hand when doing the work.

Instructions

    • 1

Straighten the liner out on a flat surface.

    • 2

Attach the appliance connector and tighten the hose clamp on the connector to the liner. Do not over-tighten.

    • 3

Add 1 foot to the measurement of the chimney from the top of the chimney crown to where the appliance connector will stop.

    • 4

Cut the liner with a sharp pair of tin snips. Be sure to leave a clean edge so that when you are installing the liner you don't cut yourself.

    • 5

Measure and cut enough insulation to cover the bottom termination connector. To determine the width needed, measure the width of the liner and multiply by 3.14, then add 1 inch. This will be the total amount needed to wrap the liner. Wrap the liner and overlap the insulation by 1 inch.

    • 6

Lay the insulation on the ground, foil-side down.

    • 7

Set the liner inside the insulation.

    • 8

Spray the liner and the insulation with spray adhesive.

    • 9

Wrap the insulation around the liner. Use foil tape to hold the seam together.

    • 10

Unroll the wire mesh and slide the liner through. Clamp the wire mesh to the liner.

    • 11

Slide the T-snout into the existing thimble in the wall of the chimney. You will not have to do this step if the liner is going to be connected directly into the top of the fireplace insert using the appliance connector.

    • 12

Slide the liner into the chimney flue. You may need to twist the liner so it fits snugly in the chute. Stop when the appliance connector connects with the T-Snout.

    • 13

Apply a heavy bead of silicone caulk around the chimney crown. Press the top plate into the silicone.

    • 14

Tighten the clamp band around the liner. Screw the top plate down with four tap-con screws.

    • 15

Cut off the excess liner above the top plate.

    • 16

Place the rain cap over the top plate and screw the clamp tightly.
