How to Reface a Brick Fireplace With Tile

Exposed brick fireplaces were installed in many homes during the 1960s and 70s. While many people enjoy the look of exposed brick, the appearance may not fit in with every home decor. For this reason, many homeowners may choose to cover the brick with tile. Any type of tile can be safely installed over bricks, provided that the joints between the bricks are filled in with portland cement, and a smooth surface is created.

Instructions

    • 1

Scoop up some wet portland cement with a trowel, and smooth it onto the bricks of the surround. Use the flat side and smooth edge of the trowel to direct the cement across the bricks. Scrape the cement with the trowel to get the thinnest layer possible, while still filling in joints and creating a flat surface. Let this mortar dry overnight.

    • 2

Lay out the tiles you intend to install on the fireplace surround on a flat surface of equal size and shape to the surround. The first tile should be set in the area directly above the middle of the firebox. The rest of the top section of the fireplace is laid next, with the legs left for last. Cut any tiles to fit the space on a tile saw before beginning to install.

Spread additional mortar onto the fireplace surround. Key this mortar with the grooved edge of the trowel, until the ridges produced are the same height throughout. Press each tile onto the surround in the same pattern you laid them out previously. Twist each tile slightly to straighten and ensure proper bonding with the wall. Allow the mortar to dry overnight before grouting.

Spread grout over the new tiles with the flat side of a grout float. Push the grout between the tiles and wipe the surface of the tiles clean with a damp sponge.
