Backyard Fireplace Ideas

Adding an outdoor fireplace makes your yard more inviting, beautiful and valuable. For those nights when you and your family want to sit in your backyard under the stars and enjoy a fire or roast marshmallows, a fireplace is a great focal point. It's also a romantic and stylish addition to your patio or porch.
  1. Two-Sided Fireplace

    • A two-sided fireplace is great for the backyard because it gives a great view of the flickering fire and allows more people sit around and enjoy it. Two-sided fireplaces give off a smaller radius of warmth than regular fireplaces do, but outdoor fireplaces aren't just for warmth. Two-sided fireplaces are also good if you have a covered porch and a patio next to each other: one side can face the porch for rainy nights and one can face the patio.

    Fire Pit

    • A fire pit is an easy-to-make and less permanent outdoor fireplace. Whether it's a bunch of rocks in a circle, a large steel hoop or a store-bought metal fire pit, it's a great focal point for gatherings and outdoor events. The best part about a fire pit is its mobility: If you decide you don't like where it is, you can move it with little sweat. A fire pit is great for renters or people who live in areas where permanent fireplaces aren't allowed.

    Stone Fireplace

    • An outdoor stone fireplace is the most luxurious type. It looks like an indoor fireplace and can be either against the house or freestanding. A stone fireplace can be made with naturally shaped stones for a rustic look, or shaped by masons to look like part of a Roman villa. A stone fireplace will outlive you and is difficult to move, but for the ambiance and regal look, it's a great addition to your backyard.

    Chiminea

    • A chiminea is another alternative for renters or people with small yards. A chiminea can even be used on a small back porch or in a driveway if you're pressed for space. A chiminea is essentially a large stone or clay vase with an open side and a narrow top. They're perfect for small fires and are widely available at home and garden stores.
