How to Install a Fireplace Screen & Door

A fireplace screen and door are a benefit to your home for many reasons. When burning the fire, the screen prevents sparks from jumping out of the burning area and the doors help to seal the fireplace when not in use to prevent heat loss. Be sure to take accurate measurements when ordering your fireplace screen and door. It is easier to install a properly fitting door than to make adjustments during installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the doors and screen from the frame on the fireplace door and screen assembly.

    • 2

Place the frame on the fireplace opening. Hold a level vertically against the frame on each side. Plumb each side, hold in position and mark the location for the screw holes with a felt tip marker. Press the tip through the screw holes around the perimeter of the frame. Remove the frame from the opening.

    • 3

Predrill pilot holes into the masonry with a 1/8-inch masonry drill bit.

    • 4

Apply a bead of stovepipe cement around the perimeter of the frame to form an effective air seal. Place the frame back in position in the fireplace opening.

    • 5

Hold a level horizontally along the top edge and attach the top of the frame to the top of the fireplace opening with masonry screws. Insert the center screw first. Tighten end screws to help level the top of the frame. Tighten more to raise the frame; tighten only until snug to lower the frame.

    • 6

Hold the level vertically against the outside edge of the frame. Insert screws into the predrilled holes and tighten the screws while keeping the side plumb. Tighten more to pull the side in or only until snug to pull in less. Repeat for the opposite side.

Replace the screen and the doors. Make adjustments to the side screws as needed to align the centers of the door properly.
