• Replacing the existing brick or other fireplace material with stone is one refurbishing idea. This can be fairly expensive, especially if you plan to rip out the existing fireplace and replace it with stone. It’s possible to cover the surface of your fireplace with stone tiles, but this is a complicated process that usually requires a professional.

Paint the Fireplace

• For a fast and inexpensive way to change the look of your fireplace, use paint. The color you choose depends on what you want to do. Painting the fireplace the same color as the walls makes it blend into the scenery and take a back seat to other items in your room. Using a shade that contrasts with the rest of the room makes the fireplace the center of your room. For example, paint the fireplace a dark shade if the rest of the room uses paler colors. Apply a primer first, especially if you're painting a brick fireplace.

Replace the Mantel

• Replacing the mantel of your fireplace is another way to give it an entirely new look. Mantels are typically made of wood but you’ll also find metal and stone or brick options. Before installing a new mantel make sure it works with the style of the fireplace. The mantel should be proportionate in size to the fireplace. If the mantel is too large it overwhelms the fireplace and may even make it hard to use. In some cases it’s possible to install a new mantel directly on top of the older one. This is best if you’re planning on extending or enlarging the existing mantel.
