How to Grout a Stream Stone Fireplace

Covering your fireplace surround with stone can be an exciting do-it-yourself project. But, like most large tasks, there are aspects that are less creative and more of a headache. Applying grout to an uneven surface like stream stone is one of these processes that may leave you feeling frustrated and contemplating giving up. If you are prepared for what it will be like, however, you can have more fortitude. Try making a faux fireplace surround with extra stones on a piece of cardboard to practice your grouting technique before trying it on the real thing.

Instructions

    • 1

Install all of the stream stones on the surround with mortar. Let the mortar dry 24 to 48 hours so that the stones are very secure. Put on gloves and a pair of safety glasses.

    • 2

Combine the sanded grout with water in a bucket, if needed for your particular product. Mentally divide the front of the stone surround into about four areas small enough for you to work with before the grout begins to set. Apply mortar to the first area with a grout float, dragging it over the stones as evenly as possible.

    • 3

Push the grout deeply between the stones in your work area with the edges of the grout float. You can also use your fingers to fill the spaces and smooth the grout lines. Clean the surfaces of the stones quickly with a damp sponge or cloth.

    • 4

Finish grouting the entire front of the surround like you did the first area. Grout each side edge of the surround in the same manner. Allow the grout to set at least 24 hours before lighting a fire.
