Sand the fireplace mantel with fine-grit sandpaper before installation. Rub a lint-free cloth over the entire surface of the mantel to remove all sand dust.
Stain or prime the mantel for paint with a paintbrush. Allow the primer or stain to dry according to package instructions.
Clean the surface of the fireplace surround with a stiff brush. Brush off any loose debris that may interfere with the bond of the mantel adhesive.
Put the top mantelpiece upside down on a flat surface covered with a drop cloth. Attach the mantel legs with the included screws or hardware, using a screwdriver, according to the included directions.
Turn the mantel right side up with the help of another person. Place the mantel up against the fireplace surround, centered and level. Mark the outline of the mantel onto the fireplace surround with a piece of white chalk.
Remove the mantel from the face of the fireplace, and lay it face down on the drop cloth. Squeeze a 1-inch thick bead of heavy-duty, construction-grade adhesive along the entire back and legs of the fireplace mantel. If scribes or lumber pieces are in place along the back of the mantel, apply the adhesive to these pieces as well. Use a zig-zag pattern when applying the adhesive for a stronger bond.
Place the mantel right side up against the fireplace surround, using the helper and chalk outline as your guide. With the helper holding the mantel in place firmly, use a level on the top and sides of the mantel to check levelness. Make any necessary adjustments by pushing or pulling the mantel into place.
Hold the mantel against the fireplace surround for at least 15 minutes, or as stated on the adhesive packaging to allow the glue to set. Allow the adhesive to dry completely for the stated amount of time before placing anything on the mantel.
