Remove the metal lid from the top of the canister to expose the gel fuel product to the air.
Nestle the fuel canister, or up to three canisters, in your fireplace between the faux fire logs or stones so that the bulk of the canister is concealed. Make sure the canister sits level on the grate, pedestal or firebox floor.
Ensure complete clearance over the canisters so that nothing is on top of them and that there is at least 1 inch clearance from the logs or stones to the edge of each canister to allow for good air flow and a readily visible flame.
Light the canisters with a long-snouted lighter filled with butane. Place the flame adjacent to the gel fuel but not touching it. A distance of 1/2 inch to 1/3 inch is typically close enough to set the gel alight.
Extinguish the gel fuel by allowing the canister to burn dry of the fuel, which typically takes two to three hours depending on the canister size. Alternatively, knock out the flame using the long, round extinguishing wand that came with your fireplace or replace the metal canister lid.
