How to Start the Pilot Light on a Gas Fireplace

While service technicians typically light the pilot light of a gas fireplace when it's installed, it is possible for the light to be blown out. Gas fireplaces are fueled by natural gas or propane. A propane tank for your fireplace can be above or below ground. If you have propane, first check that your tank is not empty. While the process for lighting the pilot light on gas fireplaces may vary according to the manufacturer, there are several steps in common.

Verify that the gas valve is on before attempting to light the pilot light. Look for a valve that regulates gas flow to your fireplace. It may be located behind a small access panel at the bottom of the fireplace, or it could be a wall or floor switch.

Locate the red ignitor button, using a flashlight to see it if necessary. Identify the main control knob, marked with the words "Off/On/Pilot;" it also can be found on the gas valve.

    • 3

Push the knob slightly. Turn it first to "Off" for a few seconds, then to "Pilot." Hold the knob down again to keep the gas line open.

    • 4

Click the ignitor button until the pilot light is lit. Release pressure on the knob slowly. If the pilot light remains lit, turn the knob to the "On" position and step away from the pilot light.

    • 5

Wait two to three minutes if the pilot light goes out, to allow time for the gas to travel to the pilot before you try again. Click the ignitor again until the pilot light is lit. Turn the gas fireplace's manual switch to the "On" position after the pilot light has been lit. The knob must be in the "On" position for the wall switch to work.
