Wood-burning fireplaces burn logs and come in two types: radiant and circulating. Radiant fireplaces heat by emitting infra-red radiation that heats the fireplace inset or firebox, which in turns generates heat into the room. Circulating fireplaces also heat the air itself and circulate the warm air so that it heats the surrounding area of the fireplace.
A gas fireplace is considered more efficient than a wood-burning fireplace. It can be vented by a chimney, or through a vent that directs exhaust outdoors, or built to function without a vent. Gas fireplaces also eliminate the need to purchase or clean up bits and ashes from wood. They operate with gas logs, burners and flame igniters.
Electric fireplaces operate solely by electricity, and create a light display that looks like flames. They can be placed and relocated to various rooms in the home. Electric fireplaces provide an efficient source for heat. They can be installed at any time, do not require permits, professional installation, a chimney, ventilation or masonry work.
