How do I Install Doors on a Limestone Fireplace?

Fireplace doors are an attractive and practical addition to any wood-burning fireplace. They protect your home from popping ashes and allow you to let the fire burn down on its own without worrying about potential hazards. Because limestone is harder than brick or tile and you must drill directly into the stone, installing doors on your limestone fireplace can seem intimidating. But having the right tools for the job will make working with limestone a cinch.

  • Drill
  • Diamond-tipped drill bit
  • Lead anchors
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Attach lintel clamps to the top back of each fireplace door, using a screwdriver and the provided screws. Screw the floor brackets to the bottom back of each door, again using the provided screws.

    • 2

Hold the fireplace doors in front of the spot where they will be installed. Use a marker to mark the floor of the limestone fireplace through the screw holes in the floor brackets. Mark the screw holes for both bottom brackets. Remove the door from the fireplace.

    • 3

Fit a drill with a diamond-tipped drill bit, which will cut through the limestone. Locate the screw hole marks on the floor. Drill a 2-inch hole straight down at each mark. Drill slowly into the limestone as a helper continually applies a small amount water to the drilling area. This keeps the limestone from ruining your drill and drill bit as you work. Clean up the muddy limestone water after you finish drilling all the screw holes.

    • 4

Gently tap lead anchors into the holes in the limestone, using a hammer.

    • 5

Add fiberglass insulation to the doors. Shove the insulation into the sides on the backs of the doors.

    • 6

Place the fireplace doors onto the fireplace. Match the floor brackets with the lead anchors. Screw sheet metal screws through the floor brackets and into the lead anchors. Use a socket wrench to tighten the screws completely.

    • 7

Attach the lintel clamps to the lintel located at the top of the limestone fireplace. Use a pair of pliers to securely tighten the clamps to the fireplace.
