Brands of Woodburning Inserts

Once upon a time, wood was the most practical -- and sometimes the only -- way to heat your home. Before the 1900s, 90 percent of the country used wood fires. Fossil fuels grew in popularity and gradually replaced wood heating systems. Modern wood burning inserts can transform old-fashioned, inefficient open fireplaces into functioning wood stoves. The insert slides into the fireplace or sits on the hearth and uses the existing chimney. An airtight fit is key to an insert's effectiveness.
  1. Jotul

    • Jotul manufactures three wood inserts. Inserts can heat from 1,300 to 1,800 square feet with a maximum heat output ranging from 40,000 to 65,000 British thermal units (BTUS) per hour. The largest model accepts logs up to 24 inches long and the smallest up to 20 inches. Features include twin blower fans, 6-inch flues, air-washed glass windows and noncatlytic clean burn systems.

    Lopi

    • Lopi offers seven wood burning inserts. At the high-capacity end, the Freedom Bay model can heat spaces up to 2,250 square feet, produces up to 74,300 BTUs per hour and accepts logs up to 24 inches long. Mid-range options include the Declaration model, which produces up to 73,300 BTUs per hour, enough to heat up to 2,000 square feet. The Answer model holds logs up to 18 inches long, heats up to 1,400 square feet of space and produces up to 66,800 BTUs per hour. Lopi inserts are constructed from steel plate or cast iron and include features such as a five-sided convection chamber system, standard bypass damper and single-control heat output.
