How do I Install Napoleon Fireplaces?

Napoleon Fireplaces offer a wood-burning fireplace or stove for enjoyment in the modern home. One of the most popular Napoleon models is a fireplace unit that is inserted into existing fireplaces. This unit creates an airtight fire that creates maximum heat with minimum fuel. These are not gas-operated but wood-burning units. It is ideal for home owners seeking to rejuvenate their fireplaces without the use of electricity or gas. The installation of these units requires that the existing fireplace meets certain specifications and requirements, but generally it is quite simple to execute.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the existing fireplace to ensure that it is between 16 1/2 and 21 inches deep, 28 1/2 inches wide and 21 1/2 inches high or 14 inches deep, 26 inches wide and 22 inches high. The chimney should be at least 15 feet high. The Napoleon fireplace insert models will only fit into existing fireplaces with these specifications.

    • 2

Clean the existing fireplace of ashes with a hand brush and complete any necessary repair work.

    • 3

Fasten the fireplace flue with wire so that it is permanently open or remove the flue completely with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Take a piece of cardboard and insert to cover the throat of the fireplace. Trace the outline of this hole on the cardboard with a pen. Cut the shape of the hole out of the cardboard to make a pattern piece. Place the pattern piece on 24-gauge sheet metal and draw to shape with an additional 2 inches on the sides. Cut a 6-inch hole where the flue sits. Cut a 2-inch flange on the sides and bend the metal into form.

    • 5

Insert the 6 inch stainless steel chimney liner so that it runs from the flue opening to the top of the chimney. Connect to the 24-gauge sheet metal.

    • 6

Insert the Napoleon fireplace into the existing fireplace and hook to the flue. Test the fireplace and ensure the blowers are working in the fireplace. The first few fires will not generate much heat but they will break in the unit and chimney. After approximately 20 hours of fire, the new fireplace should be working at its best.
