How to Mount a Termination Kit on Vinyl Siding

Termination kits are used to run vents from fireplaces to the outside of buildings. These vents are direct vents, meaning that they run straight from the vent located in the fireplace's back to the outside of the house. Direct vents with termination caps are used in homes that have fireplaces without chimneys.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the adjustable pipe into the pipe connector. Rotate it so that the four indentations slip into the slots of the pipe connector.

    • 2

Measure out and draw a 9 1/2-inch by 9 1/2-inch square where the fireplace vent is going to pass through the wall or ceiling. Cut out the hole with a saw. Place the wall fire-stop into the hole and nail it into place.

    • 3

Measure the distance in the room from a window or corner of the wall to where the vent is going to be. Using these measurements mark the vinyl siding where the center of the termination cap is going to be installed.

    • 4

Place the termination cap in the vinyl j-block to make sure that it fits. Remove any overhanging tabs on the cap with a saw. Cut a larger hole for the vent and termination cap to fit through with tin snips. Drill holes through the back of the j-block if necessary to nail the block and termination cap together.

    • 5

Measure out the bottom of the vent on the bottom panel that is 1/4-inch larger than the vent termination cap. Draw it on the panel so that it will cover the joint between two siding panels. Do the same for the top panel. Cut the drawn sections out with the tin snips.

    • 6

Insert the J-hook vinyl siding removal tool under the bottom lip of the siding panel and pull down to release the siding where the vent is to be installed. Move the tool to the right and pull the siding off all the way to the other end. Pull out the nails on the siding panel directly below the stripped panel.

    • 7

Cut an 11-inch by 11-inch square hole through the outer wall of the house. Place the vent termination cap into the center of the hole. Secure it to the wall with four wood screws. Place a bead of non-combustible sealant around the outer edges. Insert the termination cap into it with the arrow on its side pointing up.

    • 8

Slip the vinyl siding wall fire-stop onto the vent pipe on the interior side of the wall. Gently insert the vent assembly into the vent cap. Drive three sheet metal screws into the pipe section to secure it to the termination cap. Move the wall fire-stop snug up to the wall. Insert screws through the fire-stop, vent cap and wall.

    • 9

Push the pipe into the termination cap until the cap is overlapping it by 1 1/2-inches. Drive three screws through the outer housing of the termination cap's bottom and into the outer wall of the pipe vent to secure them together. Drive the screws into the top of termination cap to secure it to the wall.

    • 10

Insert the bottom of the j-block into the bottom cut-out section of the vinyl siding. Pull down the bottom siding and place two nails into the j-block nail slots, one on each corner. Release the bottom siding and drive two nails into the nail slots on the top upper corners of the j-block mounting strips.

    • 11

Nail the bottom siding to the wall to replace the nails you removed. Reattach the upper siding panel by zipping the bottom groove into the the lock with J-hook tool.
