How do I Vent a Wood Burning Pellet Stove Through the Floor?

Proper venting is critical to the safe and efficient use of a stove. All combustion byproducts must be removed safely from the stove to the outdoors without leaking into the indoor space being heated. You can vent a wood pellet burning stove through as many floors as necessary or desired, but you must use only materials rated for the application. You should also check local building codes to meet requirements.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the point on the ceiling above the stove where the exhaust pipe will exit. Ensure clearance of at least 3 inches from floor joists and other flammable material. Use a plumb line to ensure that the ceiling hole aligns with the flue on the stove.

    • 2

Measure the hole that will incorporate the flue pipe and firestop spacer. Use a reciprocating saw to cut the hole through the ceiling and floor material.

    • 3

Connect the vent pipe to the stove. Assemble the connections, firestop spacer, firestop and clamps according to manufacturer specifications. Seal all joints with high-temperature silicone caulk to ensure leak-proof connections.

    • 4

Add the firestop and clamp to the length of vent pipe protruding above the floor to cover the hole around the vent pipe.
