How to Store Corn for Home Heating

Corn stoves burn dry corn as a source of heat. Developed in 1969, the stoves are an alternative to wood and wood pellet stoves, according to the magazine Backwoods Home. The corn fuel is commonly delivered and stored in 50-pound bags. Depending on temperatures and settings of the stove, a bag may last about 24 hours. Storage of the bags can pose a challenge for homeowners.

Instructions

    • 1

Place pallets or other wood structures on the floor of the basement or the garage. The object is to create an air space between the bags of corn and the cement floor. This limits absorption of moisture by the corn.

    • 2

Stack the corn on the pallets. Forty bags of corn make up 1 ton of corn. Depending on usage, the corn may be delivered in 1- or 2-ton increments. Eighty bags, 2 tons, takes up an area 6 feet high and wide if the bags are stacked like cordwood with the ends of the bags out.

    • 3

Monitor the area for birds and rodents. Corn is an attractive feed for these animals, and most are capable of chewing through bags.
