What Do You Put Around a Propane Fireplace?

Many kinds of fireplace inserts can be purchased and installed in a home, including those which operate on propane fuel. They all have their own installation requirements. Be cautious about fire and exhaust fumes, while being mindful of costs.
  1. Building Codes

    • Consult the local building codes. There are universal themes to regulations on fireplace inserts, but few overall standards. What is required in one county may not be an issue in the next. Having a fireplace not built to code could not only be dangerous, but could impact the resale value of your home.

    Inserts

    • Inserts may be a requirement, made of metal or some other fireproof material. The idea is to have a barrier between the flames and wood framing of the structure.

    Hearth

    • Many jurisdictions require that stone, tile or some other fireproof material be installed on the floor in front of the fireplace, extending a certain distance out into the room.

    Space

    • Most jurisdictions have a minimum space requirement; a certain amount of air space must exist between the fireplace and anything that could burn.
