How to Install a Lock-Top II Chimney Damper

The Lock-Top II chimney damper is a metal door which is installed on the top of a chimney. It includes a 30-foot long metal cable which attaches to the inside of the fireplace. You can close the door on the top of the chimney from the fireplace, so it can be closed when it's not in use. A closed door on top of the chimney reduces the amount of heat which escapes the house, increasing energy efficiency and reducing heating costs.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the black tube in the included bag. Remove the jam nut from the top of the tube.

    • 2

Assemble the chimney fire safety device from the safety device wire, the black tube and the leg connector wire. Attach the leg connector wire to the grooves in the middle of the safety device wire. Insert the tube into the hole on top of the safety device wire.

    • 3

Attach the safety device to the damper lid. Insert the black tube into the bottom of the lid. Turn the safety device so that its corners match up with the corners on top of the lid. Screw the jam nut back onto the top of the tube with a wrench.

    • 4

Apply 1/4-inch bead of furnished adhesive to the opening of the chimney.

    • 5

Insert the cable and handle down the chimney, ensuring you can access them from the fireplace.

    • 6

Align the chimney damper with the top of the chimney and press down firmly.

    • 7

Apply more adhesive to any gaps between the damper and the chimney.

    • 8

Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to dry before you continue.

    • 9

Drill a 1/4-inch hole using a 1/4-inch masonry drill bit in the brick inside the fireplace, about 20 inches above the floor of the firebox.

    • 10

Position the top hole of the bracket over the drilled hole and hammer in an anchor nail.

    • 11

Drill a second 1/4-inch hole using the bottom hole on the bracket as a guide.

    • 12

Hammer an anchor nail into the bottom hole.

    • 13

Thread the hanging cable, along with its chain and handle, into the hole in the bracket until there is no slack above the bracket.

    • 14

Loosen the adjustment clamp on the cable with a wrench. Slide the adjustment clamp up to the bracket.

    • 15

Close the damper by pulling the cable.

    • 16

Adjust the clamp's position for the tightest possible seal with the damper closed.

    • 17

Tighten the clamp with the wrench.

    • 18

Cut the excess cable at the bottom off with the wire pliers and discard it.
