Metal Roof Woodstove Installation

Many homeowners add woodstoves to an existing room for warmth or cooking. Stove exhaust must be ventilated to the outside through a chimney that extends out from the roof. Metal-roof chimney installations differ from those on shingled roofs.
  1. Woodstove Placement

    • Choose a noncombustible floor surface, such as concrete, for placement of the wood stove. Use stovepipe material for the connection between the stove and the chimney piping. The stovepipe should be placed at least 18 inches away from walls and ceilings.

    Metal Roof Considerations

    • The chimney should extend 2 feet above the roof as a minimum clearance. The connection between the chimney and roof must be properly sealed to prevent rainwater infiltration into the underlying roof material. Soft metal roofing pieces, which fit around the piping, are hammered down onto the metal roof top.

    • Website Hearth.com suggests surrounding the chimney with wood pieces that have been sealed with silicone or tar. Metal roof flashings can then be attached on top of the wood pieces for extra assurance against water infiltration.
